Alone in a concrete prison: meet Morelia Zoo’s polar bear

“Yupi is a female polar bear who was brought to the Morelia Zoo in Mexico in 1992 when she was only 3 months old. She came from Alaska as an orphaned cub. Upon arrival at the Mexican zoo Yupi was placed in an old grizzly bear pen. This is the pen in which she still lives today… she’s is now 20 years old.”

The animals in this video were observed at zoos in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland and Romania as part of The EU Zoo Inquiry 2011, an extensive investigation conducted by the Born Free Foundation, in association with the European coalition ENDCAP, involving 200 zoos in 21 EU countries. It’s clear that the poor conditions witnessed during this investigation have taken their toll on the animals. See

Spain’s Queen Sofia Trying To Cheer Up Depressed Elephant

MADRID — Susi, the only elephant at the Barcelona zoo, lives in a small pen, has lost her best friend, and is said to be depressed. But now someone has come to her aid _ not a fairy godmother or even a princess, but a queen.

Spain’s Queen Sofia is asking Barcelona City Hall to move Susi, 36, to a larger space, perhaps at a safari-style park.
